Wuhan, a city about 3 1/2 hours from where I live, trumps Jiujiang in all things
Western. To celebrate a Western holiday (Halloween), we naturally needed to make
a return visit. Following a trip to giant German supermarket Metro, I headed
back to Jiujiang with even more cheese!!!
Metro was an overwhelming experience -- it's warehouse-style market (think CostCo) that sells both groceries and housewares. You even need a membership card to shop there. We had eyes only for cheese; I made off with cheddar, brie, mozzarella, a spreadable swiss cheese, and an enormous ball of edam. (Also in the photo is a slab of aged parmesean that my loving father mailed to me via China Post!). A friend of mine bought a giant block of cheddar, which was approximately the size of a PC tower.
The prices of the cheese? Well, they are comparable to U.S. prices -- about $3.50 for my mild New Zealand cheddar, or 30 yuan. But when you compare it to the price of fruits and vegetables, the price seems astronomical. I mean, for 30 yuan you could buy dinner for four at a local restaurant.
I have eaten nothing but cheese and baguette for the last 24 hours.
