Speaking of spicy Sichuan food, I saw a segment on
CCTV this evening about
the
2004 International Foods and Tour Festival of China, which kicked off today
in Chengdu. The festival is to feature not just Sichuan chefs, but chefs
representing the eight major Chinese cooking styles, as well as German and
French chefs. Oh, what I wouldn't give to attend!!!
Over 100,000 people are expected to attend the festival; they built a 20,000 square meter kitchen just for the occasion. It is alleged to be the largest kitchen in China, though I'd be curious to see if others come close in size. Given the way this country eats, I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few right up there.
Not that I could have gone anyway -- Chengdu is a good 24 hours away by train. I plan to visit when I finish teaching in February.
