I have never been a huge fan of Zagat's -- I always felt their reviews told you "virtually nothing" about any of the "restaurants and establishments" in the "great Metropolis that is New York City." They're good for phone numbers and cross-referencing neighborhoods and locations. But the food info? Forget it.
I loved Manhattan User's Guide publisher Charlie Suisman's rant on the slim maroon guides. Apparently, he used to work there, and dishes on how the "magic happens." I like how he plugs the "real info" sites such as eGullet and Chowhound. I guess he's also going to do a list of food blogs he goes to for info. I'm very interested to see what he lists.
